Dungeon Siege II   v2.2/v2.3
    Inn Conversion Bug

Dungeon Siege v2.3 hasn't many serious bugs (lacks i know a few) however a very evil bug is the phenomenon players call the 'inn conversion bug' or short the 'inn bug'.
It seems to happen only when converting/importing a party from v2.0/2.1/2.2 into Broken World addon version 2.3 - so if you start your party directly with v2.3/BW then this bug is not probable resp. hasn't been reported so far.

Main symptoms are that the player of a such converted faulty party will have many problems to exchange, add or kick chars/pets in/from the inn party member storage. According to some feedbacks also further problems seem probable, even incorrect savegame file writing is assumed.

Sadly there is neither an official statement nor an official patch against this inn bug, generally many things about this bug are quite unclear, why and how it really happens.

So it would be a good idea to prevent this bug as good as possible - but be prepared for some tough work and without the help of mods this work-around is hardly to realize.
I will try now to explain stepwise how you can handle it when still in v2.2 or what you can try at least (with a low chance for success) to rescue your party when already in v2.3/BW.

    - I'm right on the way to convert my party. What can i do to avoid this bug?

    - Help! I'm already playing with v2.3/BW and my party seems to suffer this nasty bug!

Your are still in v2.2 and planing to import your party into v2.3/BW:

Goal will be to leave the inn storage empty before converting (so the inn storage can be established by v2.3/BW itself) and to take everything with you that you won't easily regain in the addon resp. on the Borken World map.
So we will try to take as many items and as many mature pets with us as we can. But we are not really interested in taking the (humanoid) party members with us because they can carry less items than packmules and because they all can be rehired on the Broken World map (and this is mostly a good deal, they all have the maximum of possible skill points).

    1. Backup all your savegames, then remove the unused savegames.
Normally they are located in: My Documents / My Games / Dungeon Siege 2 / Save / Singleplayer
Take care to execute the following steps (expect of the last one, before starting v2.3/BW) on all remaining savegames. Since we don't know a lot about the technical background of this inn bug we don't want v2.3/BW to find any unprepared savegame.

    2. Install now the Hotfix Mod (inclusive All*Saves if you haven't yet).
The mod will help you to increase your party size, also you will be able to release chars form the inn into the wilderness as you can do it with pets.

    3. Increase your item transport capability I (recommended).
Check the inn keeper and ask her to increase the party size. Due to the mod installed you may get six party members even if still in mercenary mode (well, not recommended to play like this, the game would be quite easy).

    4. Increase your item transport capability II (recommended).
If you haven't enough packmules for all your items feed another one until stage 3 to get 3 inventory pages.
Best is to buy one outside of Eirulan next to the shrine guard - often her packmules are already feeded a bit.

    5. Erease your inn storage.
Return to the inn and release all chars (the humanoid ones) in the same ways as you can release pets. Then put all your items on your packmules and add as many other pets to your party as you can/have.
Of course this step may vary a bit depending on your inividual party and your prefenreces but enure the inn storage is empty when you have finished all inn manipulations.
Now your party is conversion-ready and will probably look like a caravan:

    6. Save your party, close the game and remove in v2.3-incompatible mods (incl. Hotfix mod).
Your party should be ready now for the import into the addon/v2.3.
Note now that the addon/v2.3 also will include mods form the original DS2 installation (via Windows registry) thus remove all mods you suspect not to be tuned for the addon/v2.3!
You also have to remove the Hotfix mod again (it's only for v2.2), however if you enjoyed its features then the Aranna Legacy Mod would be the corresponding substitute (install it in the 'resources' folder of your addon/v2.3 installation, also ensure that the new All*Saves for Broken World is installed too).

    7. Start now v2.3/BW.
...and welcome on Broken World! (Well i hope so.)

Unload the items for the party members you like to rehire and send the packmules back to the inn storage.

Like this all your chars have been converted correctly and the inn storage has been created by v2.3/BW itself.
Just go on playing and have fun - the inn conversion but should be bypassed now.

If your already in v2.3/BW and guess your party suffers the inn conversion bug:

Well unfortunately there is only a low chance to rescue your party now since some required steps often can't be done with a faulty party.
Goal would be to recover as many items form the inn chars/pets and some mature pets too. Be aware that the rejoint of chars/pets may fail by any reson, also it may be inpossible to release them - thus a very conflicting situation, however if you like to try it nethertheless:

    1. Backup all your savegames and better remove the currently unused savegames.
Normally they are located in: My Documents / My Games / Dungeon Siege 2 /Broken World / Save / Singleplayer
Take care to execute the following steps (expect of the last one, before restarting v2.3/BW) on all remaining savegames. Since we don't know a lot about the technical background of this inn bug we don't want v2.3/BW to find a possibly faulty savegame.

    2. Install the Aranna Legacy Mod (inclusive All*Saves for Broken World).

    5. Temporarly erease your inn storage.
Return to the inn and release all chars (the humanoid ones) in the same ways as you can release pets (the mod will allow this). Then put all your items on your packmules and add as many other pets to your party as you can/have.
Of course this step may vary a bit depending on your inividual party and your prefenreces but enure the inn storage is empty when you have finished all inn manipulations.
Note, if you are not able to get it empty then this attempted rescue has sadly failed. :=(

    6. Save your party and close the game.
Since we don't now if the game memory is affected by this game bug better exit the session and shot down the game too and start it again.
If you don't like the Aranna Legacy mod this now would be the moment to remove it.

    7. Restart v2.3/BW.
Normally it should be possible now to rehire all chars still available on the map. Of course if you were forced probably to kick Yoren then you have to wait until the next game mode.

So this was the rescue effort when already in v2.3/BW. Hopefully it will work with you, unfortunaly some players have reported that it was inpossible to rescue the party and that they were forced to edit/hack the savegame, sadly even more complicated and by loosing the majority of their collected loot...

    However good luck!
